碘摄入量充足的国家最常见的甲状腺功能亢进症病因。

由 TSH 受体抗体所致。

甲状腺功能亢进症其他病因不会引起的甲状腺外表现包括眼眶病、胫前黏液性水肿（甲状腺皮肤病）或杵状指。

诊断检测为：血清 TSH 降低、循环甲状腺激素水平升高、可检测到 TSH 受体抗体、甲状腺放射性碘（或锝 99）摄取率增高。

治疗方案包括抗甲状腺药、放射性碘疗法和甲状腺手术。

如不进行治疗，甲状腺功能亢进症可导致心律失常、高输出量性心力衰竭、骨骼矿物质丢失，在很少的情况下，还会导致甲状腺危象，在老年患者中尤为如此。

不常见的并发症包括继发于眼眶病的视力丧失或继发于皮肤病的象皮病。
