Water-soluble contrast agents

In patients with partial SBO without peritonitis, water-soluble contrast agents can be administered to resolve the obstruction. Although not strictly therapeutic, their administration may shorten hospital stay in those not requiring surgery.[36] However, this procedure should only be performed in a closely monitored setting. The appearance of water-soluble contrast agent in the colon within 24 hours is strongly predictive of non-operative resolution.
